Dentist in Pasadena, CA Describes Dental Crown Services Available in his Practice

Pasadena, CA area patients who are interested in visiting a dentist for restorative dentistry are welcome to ask about the services available at Pasadena Prosthetics and General Dentistry. Drs. Christopher and Baldwin Marchack provide solutions for individuals who are faced with the need for repairs within the smile. This includes dental crowns.

What is a dental crown?

Drs. Christopher and Baldwin Marchack are dentists who are pleased to provide dental crowns as one of many dental restorations available in their practice. Dental crowns are often fabricated from ceramic or porcelain. This is because these materials closely mimic the appearance of natural tooth enamel. When the restoration is bonded into place, it looks like the rest of the teeth in the smile, blending in and providing an aesthetic restoration. A crown, sometimes called a “cap,” is a cover for a natural tooth or a dental implant abutment. The crown covers all visible areas of a natural tooth or replaces one. The crown is placed on a tooth that is prepared with the removal of a portion of enamel to ensure no bulk is added.

How are dental crowns used?

Dental crowns are used in several different ways. A dentist may use a dental crown to:

  • Cover the abutment of a dental implant to act as a tooth replacement
  • Cover a tooth that is weak or damaged to add an extra layer of protection
  • Fuse to a false tooth to fabricate a dental bridge for tooth replacement

What is the process of obtaining a dental crown?

The way a dental crown is being used will determine the process from preparation to placement. For dental crowns being fabricated for a dental implant, there is no preparation needed except for the placement of the implant. Then, a dental crown is made to act as a false tooth and is attached to the implant to complete the function and beauty of the smile. For dental crowns being fabricated to cover natural teeth, the tooth requires preparatory work prior to fabrication of the dental crown. The dentist will remove enamel from around the natural tooth, then will take a series of impressions. The molds are then sent to a dental laboratory where a ceramist is given specific instructions regarding the shape, size, and color of the restoration. In the meantime, a temporary crown is placed over the tooth to protect it while patients wait for their final restoration to arrive at the dental office. Once the crown is sent to the dentist, patients book another appointment for the removal of their temporary crown and the bonding of their final restoration in place. After this has been completed, the process is done, and patients can go about the rest of their day with a new restoration!

How to care for a dental crown

It is important for patients to continue to brush and floss their teeth and maintain their routine dental visits with their dental team for cleanings and examinations.
