Pasadena, CA prosthodontists apply a personalized touch to dentures

The specialty of prosthodontics had its start in creating dentures. While all dentists receive basic education in dentures, dental school curriculum is meager in this area. Thus, most dentists don’t feel confident enough to seek denture cases, and may only do a few each year, never truly gaining experience. As a prosthodontist, Dr. Christopher Marchack has extensive background in all phases of dentures, producing a superior product that keeps Pasadena, CA patients smiling.

What are the types of dentures?

Dentures are prostheses to replace missing teeth. There are multiple forms of dentures.

Partial dentures are for patients who have some missing teeth. Complete or full dentures are for patients who are missing all of their teeth in an arch.

Then there are implant-supported dentures, which we use dental implants to help hold or retain a removable denture.

What are the benefits of implant-supported dentures?

These procedures have great benefits for patients who have a damaged or failing dentition where they have to lose some or all of their teeth.

The implant retained dentures help patients regain their chewing efficiency, ability to eat properly, and gain the aesthetics they desire.

Give us a call today to get your smile complete with dentures.

  • Partial – A partial replaces one or multiple teeth in an arch, and clips to existing teeth for support. It is removable for cleaning.
  • Full – This is a whole upper or lower arch of teeth. It may be made of rigid materials, or a flexible base with hard plastic teeth.
  • Complete – A full set of upper and lower teeth, designed to work together.
  • Immediate – This type of denture is made in advance and inserted as soon as teeth are extracted. You don’t have to go without teeth, but it must be relined or replaced after healing is complete.
  • Implant-retained – The premier denture solution. This is an entire upper or lower arch, anchored by four or more dental implants. All-on-4 is the only type of denture that provides support for back teeth and preserves facial bone. Plus, an upper implant-retained denture does not cover the palate, so taste and temperature sensation are not impaired.

Dentures FAQs

What exactly are dentures, and why might I need them?

Dentures are custom-made replacement teeth designed to restore your smile, chewing ability, and speech when natural teeth are missing. They fill gaps and support facial muscles, preventing a sunken appearance. Dentures can dramatically improve function and confidence, whether you’ve lost a few teeth or an entire arch.

What types of dentures are available at Dr. Marchack’s office?

There are several options to suit different needs. Partial dentures fill in gaps when some natural teeth remain. Complete dentures replace an entire upper or lower arch. For added stability, implant-supported dentures anchor directly to dental implants, offering a secure fit and better chewing efficiency. Each type is customized to fit your mouth comfortably and look natural.

What distinguishes conventional dentures from dentures supported by implants?

Conventional dentures sit on the gums and are held in place by suction or adhesives, which can occasionally cause irritation or sliding. Implant-supported dentures attach to dental implants in the jaw, providing a firm, stable foundation. This improves chewing and speaking and helps maintain jawbone strength over time, giving a more youthful appearance.

What is the process of getting dentures?

Getting dentures usually starts with a consultation and oral examination. Impressions or digital scans are taken to create a personalized plan. Temporary dentures may be provided initially, especially if extractions are needed. After your final dentures are crafted, Dr. Marchack ensures they fit perfectly, checking bite alignment, comfort, and appearance before you leave the office with your new smile.

Will wearing dentures feel strange at first?

It’s normal to need some time to adjust. Eating and speaking may feel unusual initially, but most patients adapt within a few days to weeks. Starting with softer foods and practicing speech exercises can speed up the process. Implant-supported dentures, thanks to their stability, usually reduce the adjustment period.

How long do dentures last?

With proper care, most dentures last between 5 and 10 years. Over time, changes in gum and jaw shape may affect their fit, so regular check-ups are important. Relining or adjusting dentures helps maintain comfort and function, and eventually, replacement may be necessary to ensure optimal performance.

How should I care for my dentures?

Daily cleaning is essential. Brush dentures gently with a soft brush and non-abrasive cleaner, and soak them overnight to keep them moist and bacteria-free. Maintaining healthy gums and remaining teeth is also important, so regular dental visits allow Dr. Marchack to monitor your oral health and adjust as needed.

Are dentures comfortable to wear?

Modern dentures are designed for comfort and natural function. While there may be mild pressure or soreness initially, most patients adapt quickly. Implant-supported dentures offer enhanced comfort by reducing movement and irritation, making them feel more like natural teeth.

Am I a good candidate for dentures?

Dentures are suitable for most adults missing several or all teeth. The best type of denture depends on your oral health, jawbone condition, and lifestyle preferences. A consultation with Dr. Marchack will help determine whether traditional, partial, or implant-supported dentures are the right solution for you.
