Prevention and treatment of periodontal disease in Pasadena, CA

Cavities are the most common concern in oral health. However, despite the serious damage that decay can cause, it is not the number one threat to your teeth. That distinction belongs to periodontal disease, the leading cause of adult tooth loss. Here at Pasadena Prosthodontics, we put a strong emphasis on periodontal health, from preventive care to restorative treatment.

Preventing periodontal disease

If your gums are healthy, let us help you keep them that way! Stop gum disease before it starts with good habits and dental care.

  • Brush after meals, and don’t forget to clean along the gumline.
  • Floss once daily, at minimum.
  • Eat a healthy diet with plenty of antioxidants and limited sugar.
  • Don’t skip dental appointments! Professional teeth cleaning removes hard-to-reach plaque and accumulated tartar, and a comprehensive oral examination can detect the disease in the earliest stages, when it is easily treatable.

Treatment options for every stage of periodontal disease in Pasadena, CA

Periodontal disease begins with an infection of the gums, which can spread to affect ligaments, bones, and other tissue surrounding teeth if left untreated. The mildest form, known as gingivitis, can be treated non-surgically and often without medication. Usually, deep cleaning and improved oral hygiene habits are sufficient. Periodontitis is a more advanced infection and may involve more powerful treatments.

After an evaluation and consultation, we will recommend a customized treatment plan, which may include one or more of the following:

  • Root planing and scaling – This deep cleaning technique removes tartar from pockets around teeth, and it smooths the root surface to encourage tissue reattachment.
  • Antibiotics – Oral or topical antibiotic medication can help clear up infection and give tissues an opportunity to heal. It is often used as an adjunct along with root planing and scaling.
  • Laser therapy – A gentle and minimally invasive procedure, laser rejuvenation stimulates healing of gums and reattachment to teeth. It also sterilizes the pockets around teeth, because lasers destroy bacteria on contact.
  • Gum surgery – The most severe cases may require pocket reduction, tissue grafting, or other surgical procedures.
  • Restorative treatment – Without treatment, gum disease eventually causes teeth to fall out. Even if it’s too late to save your teeth, it’s never too late to save your smile.
