Dental crowns serve many purposes

There are many reasons we may recommend a dental crown:

  • To rebuild teeth that are severely weakened, worn, or damaged.
  • To improve the appearance of teeth that are misshapen or permanently discolored
  • To anchor a dental bridge in place
  • To finish a dental implant restoration for a missing tooth

The process for dental crowns

Crowns for tooth decay

When a crown is used to repair tooth decay, the dentist first removes the damaged portion of the tooth and cleans the area out to eliminate any infection. Impressions are then taken, which are used to create the custom crown. Tooth-colored porcelain is used for the final product that is completely natural-looking. A temporary crown can be placed in the interim. Once the crown is ready and double-checked for proper fit, it can be cemented into place.

Crowns for cosmetic enhancement

If there are misshapen or permanently discolored teeth in the smile, their appearance can be enhanced with a porcelain cap. The teeth being treated with a crown can be shaped first to allow room for the cap to fit, and a shade of porcelain that matches your natural enamel can be chosen. From there, the process of fabricating and placing the crown is the same as when used for tooth decay.

Maintaining your dental crown

When properly cared for, dental crowns can last for many years. Any teeth with dental crowns should be brushed and flossed just like natural teeth. Because the crowns can chip, it’s essential to avoid biting down on hard objects or using the dental crowns to pry things open. We can check the dental crown for any damage during routine dental visits.
