Dentist in Pasadena explains the process of dental implants, an effective treatment for missing teeth

If you are missing teeth, you know the discomfort and embarrassment that they can cause in your everyday life. Fortunately, dental technology for restoring teeth has come a long way over the years and dentures are no longer the only option for replacing missing teeth. One of the best, most versatile ways to restore your smile is with dental implants. Dentist at Pasadena Prosthodontics, has expertise in this effective treatment and explains the process of placing dental implants.

Step 1: Consultation

The first step in getting dental implants is scheduling a consultation with your dentist to determine if they are a good fit for you. Dental implants can be placed for one or more missing teeth and can also be used to affix crowns or dentures securely in place. The team at Pasadena Prosthodontics will do a thorough examination and take any images necessary to understand your current oral health and recommend the best treatment option for you. If implants will be placed, your dentist will discuss the types of materials available, the cost of the procedure, what to expect, and answer any questions that you have.

Step 2: Implant procedure

At your next appointment, the implants will be surgically placed in your mouth. The dentist will use a local anesthetic so that you don’t feel discomfort or pain during the procedure. During the surgery, the dentist creates a small opening in your gum to reveal your jawbone, and then holes are drilled into the bone to place the implant post. It is placed in the bone so that the implant can fuse together with the bone in a process called osseointegration, and eventually serve as the “root” for your new tooth.

Step 3: Affixing the new teeth to the implant

After your jawbone and the implant have healed and fused together, which may take a few months, it will form a sturdy base for the new tooth. At that point, the dentist will perform another procedure to place an abutment on the implant. The abutment is what the false tooth will be attached to and is visible when you open your mouth. After the abutment is placed, you’ll need to wait about two weeks for your gums to heal. Then, the dentist will place the new tooth on the abutment and your new tooth will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth.

You don’t need to live with missing teeth any longer. Call Pasadena Prosthodontics today at 855.770.3737 to schedule a consultation and learn more about your treatment options.
